CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Feeling remiss, we entered the main house and waited for dark. We owed Cornelius some more haunting investigation.

As before, we sat in the dark, trying to stay awake.

Rosie hid a yawn behind her hand. “Why are people so interested in this?”

“Well, what happens after death is a question everyone has,” I said.

“Seeing a ghost wouldn’t answer that,” Rosie said. “For me, I would just have more—”

Footsteps came toward us. We froze, turning toward the sound.

Vivianna Farsight came around the corner. She halted and studied us with huge eyes. In her fists were two bent rods. They crossed as she gaped.

“Sorry,” Rosie said. “We didn’t mean to startle you.”

“I live to be startled.” She came closer. “What are you up to?”

“Same as you, I guess,” I said.

She frowned. “The old dowsing rods always bring me to this part of the house. I’ve got the cameras set up. Same old same old.”

“You haven’t caught anything?” Rosie asked.

“Sure, lots of stuff. EVPs, a couple full body apparitions.”

I didn’t know what that meant.

“If you found stuff, why do you keep looking?” Rosie asked.

“There’s nothing definitive,” Vivianna said, pushing her big circular specs up her nose. “Cornelius wouldn’t have been satisfied with any of my evidence. Plus, the chow’s good here.”

“Have you been in the basement?” I asked. “The attic?”

I thought about what Nanna said. She was no expert, but even her interest put her ahead of me.

“Huh,” Vivianna said. “Y’know, I don’t know if there is a basement here.”

“No attic?” Rosie asked.

“If you look from the outside, it looks like there might be an attic. I’ve never seen a way up,” the psychic said. “Why?”

I shrugged. “That’s supposed to be where you find the most ghosts.”

“Really?” Vivianna said. “I’ve never heard that. The place I find the most ghosts is in the john.”

Rosie looked at me, brows cinched. She gave the same look to Vivianna. “In the… bathroom?”

Vivianna nodded. “I was about to do an EVP session in the bathroom down here. Do you want to come?”

It sounded better than hanging out in the dark, doing nothing. We followed her into a hallway. She opened the door to a bathroom. Rosie switched on the light.

“No lights!” Vivianna said.

Rosie shrugged and turned the light off.

“Oh. Actually. Maybe we should have the light on for a second. Let me get set up.”

Rosie turned the light back on and closed the door. It wasn’t a big bathroom, only a half-bath with a toilet and sink. From her voluminous dress, Vivianna revealed a device. When she turned it on, it made a swishing noise.

“What is that?” I asked.

“Spirit box,” Vivianna said. “It randomly scans radio frequencies and the ghosts can pick out words to send us messages. Is anyone here with us?”

We stood quietly, listening to the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh. Then it made a squawk.

“Candle!” Vivianna said. “You want us to light a candle?”

I didn’t hear the word candle. We didn’t have one, anyway.

The box made another noise. “Dead!” Vivianna said.

“I heard ‘Fred,’” Rosie said.

“Who’s Fred?” Vivianna asked.

We hiked our shoulders.
